THE BATTLE FOR GERMANY
The flames licked the inside of the Reichstag ahead of Lieutenant Dhukov. He eagerly waved at his brave boys, gesturing at the rubble-strewn steps ahead. This was it! The last bastion of Germany.
The assault troops ran up the steps toward the hole blasted in the bricked-up doorway ahead and Dhukov felt the nearby sting of rifle rounds impacting on stonework. Screaming shells from 122mm artillery batteries whistled across the Spree River, adding to the noise and rumbling explosions from all around. He grimly fired his PPSh-41 toward the covered window where muzzle flashes winked, his comrades also eager for victory next to him shooting into the darkness.
His company DP MG gunners opened into the press of German soldiers milling about in the antechamber, who turned and tried to fire back. More troopers pushed from behind them and Dhukov shouted for his men to take cover behind the tall columns and hold the entrance hall.
They were so close! One more fight and the war would be won. Gunfire subsided and he yelled for the red banner party to move forward, their standard gripped tightly to their chests.
By April 1945 the Soviet Red Army had pushed to the Oder River, just on the doorstep of the German Capital, Berlin. On 16 April 1945 the Soviets launched the Berlin Offensive across the Oder.
However, the Germans had not been idle and withdrew from the Oder River and took up positions on the Seelow Height on the most direct route to Berlin. Eventually the Soviet weight of numbers and firepower told and the German were thrown back from the Oder.
Stalin’s two leading Marshals, Zhukov and Koniev, then raced to be first to enter Berlin and to take its symbolic seat of power, the Reichstag. The German defence of the city was improvised, but stubborn. Street battles raged from block to block as German regular and auxiliaries fought to hold back the pride of the motherland. Leading the way are the Red Banner regiments, advancing with determination towards the Reichstag and total victory!
